The New Boots
‘The privilege of a lifetime is being who you are.’ - Joseph Campbell
The New Boots is about De Lisle, a shy young Aboriginal guy, who meets Michiko, a free-spirited Japanese girl, and together they set out on a motorbike adventure through love, art and football.
The New Boots stars young Australian film star Luke Carroll, nominated for a 2002 Australian Film Institute award for his performance in Australian Rules. He was recently seen on SBS’s RAN and Inside Australia with Cathy Freeman. The New Boots also features a memorable cameo by former Heavyweight boxing champion of the world,‘Aussie’ Joe Bugner, who starred in the Australian hit, Gettin’ Square. (‘Aussie’ Joe is the only man ever to go the distance with Muhammad Ali twice.) Newcomer, Heon Shin, delivers a knockout performance as Michiko.
The film is based on the first-prize-winning story from Melbourne’s Herald-Sun short story competition. The story was penned by writer and artist John Campbell. Campbell and I adapted the story and, with producers Lois Randall and Terie-Lea Tobin, brought the story to the screen. The New Boots is set against the dramatic landscape of Australia's East coast and was shot over six days.
I give HUGE thanks to the businesses and film professionals who helped me to bring this film to the screen. I bled for this movie and it was a gargantuan effort by all concerned and couldn’t have been achieved without the immense generosity in time, money and expertise invested by all involved.
