The Story
Dream Racers is non-stop action. Kip and his cousin Chas have always dreamed of racing cars for a living. After an explosive kart crash, they meet hot driver and mechanic, Wynne Vega and, with a bunch of hard work, get their shot at running a kart team.
The story takes place across four books in the Kids Inc. series and tracks Kip, Chas and Wynne’s determined efforts from rank outsiders to maybe having a shot at the title.
Behind-the-Scenes
On Dream Racers I tapped my own love of sport. When I watched sport on TV as a kid, I’d get so fired up that I had to leave half way through and start playing the sport myself. I had to get involved. And I hope these books will have the same effect on you.
While I was writing, I surrounded my desk with tons of images from karting mags. I created an iTunes playlist of super-high-energy tracks - U2, Powderfinger, Moby and Phoenix and I sat down every day for six months and let these characters take me for an exhilarating ride.
As well as all the action, the books look at relationships between kids and their parents and the idea that, sometimes, your friends can feel like a second family.
I also raced a bunch of karts during the writing. The wet-track climax of the four books is based on one particular race when it rained non-stop. Feeling the kart slip, drift and spin across the track was about the most fun I’ve ever had.
I’m easily amused.

Can Kip, Wynne and Chas beat Firewheels, the hottest and meanest kart team on the track?
At Kart Games it's dog-eat-dog. But who is Kip's worst enemy on the track - Firewheels, or himself?
Kip, Wynne and Chas are cutting it in SuperLeague karting. But maybe this race will be their last.
It's the SuperLeague final - a twelve-hour Enduro race through the streets of Sydney. Dream Racers have a shot, till Firewheels start playing dirty.
